Jane Braun, a local CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER premiered “Building Wealth: A Student’s Guide to Securing Your Financial Future,” a series of four workshops focused on financial literacy for millennials, on August 5 at Tent City.
The students began the class by sharing their backgrounds and defining common financial terms. Next, they discussed the common characteristics of modern millionaires: they invest long term in the stock market, they are compulsive savers and they live well below their means. The students ended the 90-minute workshop with pizza and a group conversation about the importance of building a strong credit history.
Lauren McBride, a 2015 graduate of Coronado High School, described the workshop as “extremely beneficial.”
“Going off to college is one of the first transitions into independence and I learned how important it really is to develop good habits as soon as possible,” she said. “Next year, I’ll be more mindful of how I’m using my money…Instead of spending it on something worthless, I’ll try and use my money to make more money.”
Braun is a longtime resident of Coronado with over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. Her five children all graduated from Coronado High School. She serves on the boards of the Rotary Club of Coronado, the Coronado Historical Association and the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. Braun has been a longtime advocate of higher education and believes that “learners are earners.”
On Wednesday, August 12 at 5:30 pm, Braun will cover the basics of investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. High school upperclassmen, college students and college graduates are welcome to join the class.
