High-Risk Trees: After the September 16 failure of a large Italian Stone pine tree at Spreckels park, the City reevaluated all the trees in the park. There are currently 95 trees, including palms, in Spreckels Park. There have been four tree failures since 2014. The latest evaluation placed five Sugar Gum Eucalyptus trees in the moderate-to-high-risk category. A high-risk Sugar Gum tree at the corner of C Avenue and Sixth Street was removed on November 13. The remaining four high-risk trees will be removed the week of December 17. Spreckels Park playground, curbside parking, and various locations within the park will be closed for safety reasons.
Storm Update: A Pacific storm hit San Diego County on Thursday, November 29, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall, high surf and gusty winds. A general water advisory was issued for all coastal waters of San Diego County due to contamination by urban runoff following rain. Beachgoers are warned that bacteria levels can rise significantly in ocean water, especially near the City’s storm drains.
Sea Level Rise Plan: At its November 20 meeting, the City Council authorized the City Manager to apply for funding through the California Department of Transportation Adaptation Planning Grant Program and to issue a request for qualifications for a consultant to prepare a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan. Over the past decade, the City has received a significant amount of guidance and direction from regional planning and policy organizations. The City has recently received written support from the San Diego Unified Port District for its application for the grant and called for a coordinated approach to planning for sea level rise along San Diego Bay.
Holiday Events: Coronado begins the City’s holiday events season with the annual lighting of the civic holiday tree and menorah at Coronado Rotary Plaza on Friday, December 7, in conjunction with the annual Coronado Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade and Open House. The fun begins at 2 p.m. with Coronado’s annual Snow Mountain at the Ferry Landing, 1201 First St., where Santa and his elves will arrive via ferry at 3:20 p.m. Snow Mountain activities are provided free thanks to funding from the Port of San Diego Tidelands Activation Program and the support of the Coronado Ferry Landing and Coronado Chamber of Commerce. The downtown shopping Open House begins at 5:30 p.m., the parade begins at 6 p.m. and the Tree Lighting and Community Concert begin at 7 p.m. The Coronado Community Band Concert begins at 7:15 p.m. All events are free. The holiday lights will remain on through December at the plaza at Orange and Isabella avenues near Tenth Street. For more information on Snow Mountain call (619) 522-7342.
