Marilyn Foster Scholarships Awarded to Katie Laratt and Natalya Gomez

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Coronado Junior Woman’s Club (CJWC) members Sara Stillman, Molly Haines McKay, Heather Barnett, Lily Lamanga, and Sara Rotherham hosted an awards luncheon in honor of their 2018 Marilyn Foster Scholarship award recipients, Katie Laratt and Natalya Gomez. The luncheon was also attended by the recipients’ mothers, Alex Larrat and Martina Gomez. Special honorary guest, Mayor Richard Bailey, was in attendance and helped bring a sense of civic duty to the event.

Marilyn Foster was an inspirational, charitable, and remarkable Coronado woman. She spent her many years in Coronado giving back to the community through numerous organizations and clubs. Without a doubt, the CJWC was lucky to have her as a member, mentor, and lifelong friend. The CJWC Marilyn Foster Scholarship is named in her honor and recognizes graduating young women from Coronado High School who show promise for exceptional community service now and in the future. Each winner is awarded a scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

Like Marilyn, Katie Larrat and Natalya Gomez are exceptional young women. Katie is a member of the National Honor Society and Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Her love of science and passion to help others has fueled her desire to contribute to her community by studying genetics and genomics at University of California, Los Angeles in the fall. Katie dreams of a career as a doctor, aiding in the advancement of genomics and personalized medicine. Natalya is a bi-lingual young woman with roots in Coronado. Also a member of the National Honor Society and HOSA, Natalya expresses a deep passion for serving others and making them feel appreciated. Her extensive volunteer work includes singing to the elderly at the Coronado Retirement Village, interning at SHARP Coronado and working alongside nurses and doctors and her ongoing participation in church projects at Sacred Heart Parish. She will be combining her love for serving others and her interest in the medical field as she begins her studies at Point Loma Nazarene as a nursing major in the fall.

This is the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club’s 9th year awarding the Marilyn Foster Scholarship to graduating Coronado High School Senior young women. We congratulate both Katie and Natalya on their well-deserved awards!
