Sharp Coronado Hospital Health and Wellness Fair, April 7 – An Event Not to be Missed

Most small communities in the country don’t have their own hospital, and even fewer have hospitals that offer the services and facilities that go far beyond an emergency room or urgent care type clinic. Coronado has Sharp Coronado Hospital, and the Sharp Coronado Hospital Health and Wellness Fair is your opportunity to learn more about what kind of resources are conveniently offered here.

Julie Abraham, Director of Pharmacy and Clinical Ancillary Services, led me on a tour of the facility while explaining what will be available for the community at the Health and Wellness Fair.

Sharp Coronado Health & Wellness Fair, April 7, 9am-12 noon

During the event, there will be nine primary stations with different information. Upon arrival, each guest will be given a passport to health with nine empty squares as well as a purple Sharp Coronado bag for collecting the goodies which will be given out at the stations. As each station is visited, the passports will be stamped and giveaways collected. The giveaways will include water bottles, sunscreen, hand sanitizer and more. When all nine squares are stamped, the guests can turn in their passports to be entered into raffles for prizes ranging from massages to an InBody Assessment with a trainer and a month-long gym membership.

At the check-in booth where passports are received, guests will have the opportunity to pre-register as a patient of the hospital in the event they are ever in need of services. Pre-registering will speed up the check-in process for the future, so if you’re in need you are not struggling with paperwork. During this pre-registration, you will also enroll using PatientSecure, a hand scanning device that reads your unique palm vein pattern. Once registered, when you arrive for medical needs or appointments you will simply provide your identification, your birthdate and they will scan your hand. Your information will be retrieved from the system.

The Healthy Living Center station will have an acupuncturist who will be using ear seeds doing acupressure. The InBody Body Composition analysis machine will be available for use. Complimentary hand and chair massages and aromatherapy will be offered. Gym memberships and class schedules will be available.

There will be a stroke education station where education on the signs and symptoms of a stroke will be given. As well demonstrations and explanations of how the TeleMedicine Robot works by connecting the patient to a neurologist who is not onsite but can see what is going on. Like a neurologist on call. You will also learn how you can book a time slot in the ER for non-emergency appointments.

The Long Term Care and Skilled Nursing facility will be sharing about their Music and Memory Program. How positively impactful the use music with brain injury patients has proven to be.

The Volunteer Auxillary, which is celebrating its 60th year, will have people on hand to let you know how you can get involved in the volunteering program, the many ways you can serve and give back at the hospital.

My anticipated favorite, from the sounds of things, will be the Food Nutrition Booth. There will be demos and samples as well as information on the Mindful Cafe at Sharp Hospital’s Nourish meal program and Green Grocer Farmers Market. The Nourish program consists of meals designed to focus on the ingredients as more than just basic nutrition but also wellness. There will be food discounts for the Mindful Cafe which also offers vegan and vegetarian choices.

An Inpatient Services station will provide information about the services available for patients, including music and pet therapy. You will learn what it means to be a care partner, what Healing Touch is and how to request it. There will also be outpatient care services info, you will be able to schedule a mammogram, a bone density Dexa Scan and hear more about the imaging and wound care center.

The gift shop and Second Best store will be open for shopping during the event. You will also be able to have a look at the gym, the chapel and other areas of the hospital.

The event will be Saturday, April 7, 2018, from 9 a.m. to noon at Sharp Coronado Hospital, 250 Prospect Place, Coronado, CA 92118. Free valet parking is available (usually only available on weekdays). All of the services including the gym, the cafe which has free wifi and a delightful patio garden with tables and a fountain are open to the public. If you haven’t seen what the hospital offers, this is your chance!
