Update (Jan. 8th 2018): The San Diego medical examiner reported that contributing conditions in the death of Stan Searfus were atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. The official cause of death is listed as “drowning.”
Coronado lost a local treasure this morning. Stan Searfus passed away this morning suddenly at the age of 56 while surfing with a friend at Sunset Cliffs at Point Loma.
Stan grew up in Coronado and served as a lifeguard, the current Coronado Middle School and Coronado High School surf coach and the owner of Blue Wave Coronado surf camp.
When not in the water, he worked part-time at Chez Loma and spent time with his family.
Stan is survived by his wife Jan and children Hank, Oskar, Clark, Berkeley, and young twins Jake and Josh. A fundraising page has been set up here.
There will be a gathering at 4pm today to honor Stan. It will take place at the Coronado Shores beach near the main parking lot (Avenue De Las Arenas).
Below is a documentary from 2013 about Stan Searfus. It was produced by Ben Outlaw:
