  • San Diego Bay Parade of LightsBoats decorated with holiday lights will once again sail by Coronado during the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights on Sunday, December 17. This is the second and final boat parade of 2017. The Recreation Department’s Boathouse will host a paddle event, the Bay Parade of Lights Tour, in conjunction with the boat parade. The paddle is limited to 20 people and costs $20, or $15 for residents, plus the cost, if any, of a vessel rental. Participants will paddle to the Coronado Ferry Landing to view the parade. Call (619) 522-7342 for information. Speaking of boat parades, the Cays Yacht Club held its annual boat parade on Saturday, December 9.
  • Fire Department Updates: Here are a few updates from the Coronado Fire Department:
  • Earlier this month, the Coronado Fire Department deployed Engine 36 with a crew of four to assist with efforts to control the Lilac Fire. They were assigned to a strike team, and a battalion chief, who also was deployed, served as a strike team leader for a different strike team. They all returned safely. A San Diego fire engineer was killed in the Thomas Fire in Ventura County, it was announced yesterday, December 13. The job can be extremely dangerous and challenging.
  • In other news, two of the City’s three battalion chiefs have retired within the past two months. This will create a ripple effect throughout the department as the City hires and promotes to fill those positions. Recruitment and testing is occurring now. The Human Resources Division within the Administrative Services Department is working to fill these, as well as other citywide, vacancies. Many employees are entering retirement age. As the City is small, the effects of each vacant position are noticeable. This type of hiring spurt is rare.

  • Gas Odors at Centennial Park: The City responded to a complaint of a gas odor at Centennial Park at 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, December 10. The Fire Department and SDG&E initially found levels of methane at 1,000 parts per million or 1 percent at the sewer cover. This was during the time of noticeable odor. Over a two-hour period, SDG&E sent other personnel to evaluate and determine the cause. Crews located the utilities, tested the soil and found no natural gas leaks migrating up. Gas meters brought in to perform further tests found the levels of methane in the sewer to be 2-3 parts per million, all normal with no indication of a leak. SDG&E determined that the initial level of methane of unknown cause and normal sewer gases combined to cause the odor that prompted the call. A final test at around 8:30 p.m. found minute levels of methane, in the normal range.
  • Hazardous Waste Holiday Closures:  In observance of upcoming holidays, the Coronado Household Hazardous Waste disposal location at 101 B Ave. will be closed two consecutive Saturdays, December 23 and December 30.  A reminder that the program is available to Coronado residents only. No business or contractor waste is permitted.  View flier for more information and a list of items you may bring.  Call Public Services for more information at (619) 522-7380 or (619) 756-4464 on Saturdays.
