Registration Open for the 2017 Coronado Turkey Trot Benefiting Rady Children’s Hospital

It’s time! Registration is open for the 4th Annual “Turkey Trot” at Tidelands Park on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 23, 2017. The Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary – Coronado Unit invites you, your family and friends to “Move your feet…before you eat!” Net proceeds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Center, and the Sleep Center.

Please visit www.rchacoronado.com to register for the 8:00am, 5K run/walk. Runners, strollers, and walkers are welcome! It is a timed event with male and female awards by age groups. All participants will receive a beautifully customized medal commemorating the 4th Annual Coronado 5K Turkey Trot and a custom-designed 2017 Turkey Trot t-shirt.

The goal this year is to donate $75,000 to the Cystic Fibrosis Center, and the Sleep Center at Rady Children’s Hospital. Turkey Trot Co-Chair, Kristina Quesada, is mother to six-year old Cystic Fibrosis patient, Ellis Rose. Their family visits the CF Center at Rady Children’s every three months, after completing a three year study in Kansas City and Seattle on the ground breaking drug Kalydeco. Since Ellis Rose was born in 2010, the average life span for CF patients has gone from 37 years to 42 years, thanks in part to drugs like Kalydeco, which treats the underlying causes of CF rather than the symptoms.

“Rady Children’s is a great location for CF, but it’s a small division for all of the San Diego patients. We want to do everything we can to promoting awareness of CF, while raising funds to increase personalized services to each patient,” says Quesada. “We are grateful for the generosity and support the [Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary] Coronado unit has shown,” she added.

These inpatient care and home care services give patients access to physician and nurse specialists, respiratory care practitioners, dietitians, physical therapists, social workers, genetic counselors, pharmacists and home care specialists, child life specialists, and consulting specialists.

The Sleep Center is a growing division of Rady Children’s that specializes in diagnosing and treating pediatric sleep disorders. Last year Publicity Chair Kim Peterson’s daughter Kylie was suffering from fatigue and enlarged adenoids. Her Rady’s otolaryngologist suggested a sleep study, which confirmed that her adenoids were affecting her sleep. This gave her parents comfort that proceeding with an adenoidectomy was the right decision. Her fatigue subsided and her follow-up sleep study confirmed the surgery was a success. The family would like other children have access to the Sleep Center, which can make a big impact on the life of the child and the whole family.
