- Heavy, Prolonged Rain Expected: Heavy wind and rain storms are expected through at least Monday, January 23. The Police Department reminds drivers that if your wipers are on, your headlights also should be on. Rain may bring flooding to parts of Coronado so be prepared. The City provides sandbags for Coronado residents in need at four locations. (See map below). Public Services crews monitor the City’s storm pump stations and the 8.5 miles of storm drains during every rain event, day or night, every day of the year. Residents are asked to park in driveways and garages, if possible, to leave curbs and gutters unobstructed. This makes it easier for water to flow into the storm drain inlets. Residents and local businesses also can help by notifying the City of minor flooding issues and routine potholes that develop due to rain by using the City’s“Ask Coronado” app. Download the app from the Apple store or in the Google Play store to quickly and easily submit service requests. Residents also may call Public Services at (619) 522-7380 during business hours and the Police Department non-emergency line at (619) 522-7350 after hours to report routine rain-related issues. For more urgent safety hazards, such as a downed tree or power line in roadway, call 911. In addition to Stormwater Division staff, Public Services crews from the Streets and Trees divisions will be working all weekend to monitor the situation and respond to emergencies.
- Active Transportation Master Plan: The Stakeholder Advisory Committee held its third meeting on Thursday, January 19, for the Active Transportation Master Plan, a comprehensive identification and prioritization of non-automobile transportation issues affecting Coronado. Twenty-one people, including 10 committee members and two people in the audience, in addition to staff attended the meeting. The committee worked to plan a public workshop on February 22, which will provide information about the planning process, gather resident input about a community vision, and provide residents an opportunity to raise specific concerns about getting around Coronado. For more information on the plan and how you can get involved, visit https://www.coronado.ca.us/activetransportationplan or call (619) 522-2423.
- New Banners on Orange: Coronado, with input from its Cultural Arts Commission, has installed new banners on Orange Avenue from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas celebrating the City’s rich history. The banners, the fourth in a series funded through the Coronado Tourism Improvement District’s Community Grant Program, highlight three specific areas where Coronado has made history – books, sports and music. For more information on the banner program and the upcoming Call to Artists for the April banners, visit CoronadoARTS.com or contact the Contract Arts Administrator at (619) 522-2633.
