South Beach Restroom Project Returns

The next city council meeting is scheduled for 4:00pm on Tuesday, November 15.

The South Beach Restroom project is back. It tops the city council agenda for November 15.

south-beach-restroomThere have been calls for a public restroom on south beach for many years.  As far back as 2010 it was included in a list of public works projects. Two years later, following much discussion by the city council as well as public workshops, a site and a conceptual design were presented at the city council’s February 2012 meeting.

On Tuesday the council will review an environmental impact report (EIR) and coastal permit request for a restroom next to the cul-de-sac at the end of Avenida Del Sol. The council will also vote on a mitigation monitoring and reporting program, approve the exterior design and the coastal permit.pg2-15eir

Two condo conversion projects will also be considered. The first involves five residential units at 1014 Fifth Street; the second, two units at 900 G Avenue.

Also to be discussed is the cultural arts commission request for $120,000 from their fund balance to hire cultural planning professionals to assist in the development of an arts and culture strategic plan. The idea is to create a “cultural vision” for the community and to set long-range goals for the commission and the arts community.

Councilman Mike Woiwode wants the council to consider raising council members’ pay at a future meeting. In a letter to City Manager Blair King, Woiwode noted that the rate of pay, set 20 years ago, has “diminished by the rate of inflation.” He suggests a ballot initiative to index council members’ compensation, so pay can “keep pace with the economy.”

Woiwode is stepping down from the council at the end of 2016 and will not benefit from any changes in its compensation package.

Before settling down to the serious business of governing, the council will first hand out turkeys to the winners of the annual Thanksgiving coloring contest.

The council meeting begins at 4pm in the Coronado City Council Chambers at 1825 Strand Way.
