CMS 6th graders will be attending the annual San Diego County Outdoor Education Camp at Camp Cuyamaca from October 24-28. This is an intense week-long program which allows our students to participate in various hands-on science activities in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains.
The San Diego County Office of Education website states that, “Cuyamaca Outdoor School, operated by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), is the only outdoor education program in San Diego County featuring credentialed teachers and a curriculum aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards.
“Nearly 12,000 students each year attend Cuyamaca Outdoor School during four- or five-day excursions in the mountains of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.”
The cost for each child to attend is $380.00, and while many of our children’s families are able to meet this financial requirement, others find that part or all of this fee is a significant burden. No child will be denied participation in the Outdoor Education Camp because of financial need. Every child who wants to attend will be given the opportunity.
In order to make 6th Grade Camp a reality for all, we need the help of our community members. Interested individuals or companies are invited to “Adopt a Camper.” Any donations that are made will be greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable to Coronado Middle School.
If you would like any further information about the San Diego County Outdoor Education Camp (www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us./outdoored), please feel free to call our school secretary, Dollyanne Hutchins at Coronado Middle School (522-8921, ext. 3097).
We appreciate your support of this unique and memorable educational experience for our sixth graders.
Sincerely,
Karin Mellina, M. Ed.
