On Sunday, June 12, 2016, The Coronado Junior Woman’s Club hosted its scholarship award luncheon at Leroy’s Kitchen + Lounge in honor of DaniRose Hill, the 2016 Marilyn Foster Scholarship award recipient.  Junior Woman’s Club members, Maggie Pettit, Toni Trinidad, Sara Stillman, and Kaye Sweetser were joined by two of our city council members, Mike Woiwode and Richard Bailey, to honor and celebrate DaniRose Hill. Also in attendance was DaniRose’s mother, Laura Hill.

The $2,000.00 annual scholarship is named for long time CJWC member, Marilyn Foster. Those who knew Foster understood how much this remarkable woman gave back to the community of Coronado. Foster spent her many years in Coronado as a volunteer and leader within numerous organizations and clubs.

Graduating CHS girls can apply for the scholarship in the spring of their senior year by writing an essay which explains how they give back to their community, or plan to give back to their community, through a passion or field of study.

Like Marilyn, DaniRose is a exceptional young woman. Throughout her time at Coronado High School, Hill found her own unique way to give back to her community.  In her sophomore year, Hill began Project Sammich, a club dedicated to feeding the hungry and homeless. The heart of The Project Sammich Club is about community. Club members come together to make hundreds of sandwiches for the homeless. But they don’t stop there! The members then go directly into downtown San Diego to make face to face connections with homeless individuals as they hand out the sandwiches. With Hill’s leadership and passion driving the club forward, Project Sammich is now a 501c3 tax-exempt organization, with chapters starting up across the country.

In the fall, Hill will be following her dreams to the University of California at Santa Barbara. DaniRose has been a surfer for many years, and is excited to further explore her passion for both surfing and environmental science. “Surfing is undeniably the centerpiece of my life… It gave me the inspiration to major in environmental science, and the connection that allows me to pursue environmental issues passionately and whole-heartedly.”

Congratulations, DaniRose, on continuing such a wonderful legacy. The Coronado Junior Woman’s Club is proud to award you the 2016 Marilyn Foster Scholarship Award!
