Suspicious Object Shuts Down Orange Avenue and Spreckels Park (VIDEO)

“It’s better to be safe than sorry. This park is the heart of Coronado," said Coronado resident Hope Masica.

Coronado Police and Fire responded to a suspicious object found in Spreckels Park around 9:30am this morning. Drivers were rerouted to surrounding streets, as police worked diligently to ensure the community’s safety.

Police say a suspicious object was found on the ground between the bus stop bench and trashcans near Spreckels Park.

After further investigation by officials and San Diego County Hazardous Materials, it was determined the suspicious object, positioned on the ground between the bus stop bench and trashcans was not a threat. Official reports obtained by eCoronado.com say the object, a yellow 5-gallon plastic utility bucket (with plastic toy on top), was found empty upon further investigation by the Hazmat squad.

Coronado resident Hope Masica was in the area during the investigation. “We came out of story time around 10:45am and saw the flashing lights and road blocked off. No one would tell us what had happened.”

Masica says she’s glad local police exercised extra precaution by evacuating the 600-800 block of Orange Avenue. “It’s better to be safe than sorry,“ says Masica. “This park is the heart of Coronado. Story time at the Library was in session, there are children at the Catholic school nearby, kids are playing in the park, and the busiest street runs through here.”

Orange Avenue was reopened just before 12:00pm.
