Edward, Prince of Wales, visit to Coronado and dinner at the Hotel Del Coronado in 1920. He served in WWI and be came King of England in 1936. In 1937 abdicated the throne and then married Wallace Simpson. Although Wallace Simpson also lived in Coronado with her husband, Earl Winfield Spencer, the first Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station, she did not meet Prince Edward in Coronado. She later met him in England while she was with her second husband, Ernest Simpson.
Colonel J. H. Pendleton, Mayor of Coronado from June 1928- 1930, had been in Coronado at least since July, 1914, and built a home on the island. He set up a military outpost along the Spanish Bight on North Island. This group would start with over 1100 officers and men would eventually grow to be the US Marine Corps Depot. By 1916, before WWI ended, this group dwindled to two men. Colonel Pendleton came back from serving as Military Governor in the Dominican Republic during 1916-1917 and carried his mementos, two cannons which in 1924 were donated to the town of Coronado. These cannons are now positioned Star Park. Pendleton was involved in many large and small civic affairs. He even helped judge a bicycle parade in 1922.

The 125th year anniversary of the incorporation of Coronado as a city is an opportunity to learn more about our history as a community. We will post a few interesting moments of the past 125 years along with some interesting historical photographs from the archives of the Coronado Historical Association, the Coronado Public Library, and the Kingston Trio legacy Project. Thanks to these organizations and to Susan Enowitz, coordinator of this project, along with Mary Beth Dodson.
