Walking on Coronado Beach early one morning with Capt. Al Waldman, USNR, by now in his 80’s, who always proudly wore his USNA Class of 1943 sweatshirt, we could see, heading our way, a large group of Navy SEALs running in formation. Al and I stopped while they ran past. Al beaming and waving. Suddenly, from amongst the group, a voice rose over the cadence: “OH-THREE!” — a reference to his Academy graduation class of 2003. Al, without hesitation, replied in an even louder voice than the young runner: ” FORTY-THREE!!” Instantly, all the SEAL’s and everyone within earshot burst out laughing and cheering. The sound of 100 plus people laughing, instantly felt like a moment of pride and affection for all service men and women within the 60 year bookends of these two brothers. It took my breath away. – Elizabeth Baker |
