Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Shuttle Bus Service Returns June 7

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Caltrans Speed Study Third/Fourth Street Speed Limits

The California Department of Transportation is set to present to the City Council Tuesday, June 2, the results of its recently finalized speed study for State Routes 282 and 75, or Third and Fourth streets. Caltrans is required to set speed limits according to the results of engineering and traffic studies. As a result of its recent speed studies, Caltrans has agreed to maintain the current speed limit of 25 mph for the sections of Third and Fourth west of Orange Avenue and to increase the speed limit by 5 mph to 30 mph for the sections of Third and Fourth east of Orange. Although the City Council does not have a role in setting speeds on the state highway, Caltrans agreed to present the traffic survey at the public meeting, which starts at 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 1825 Strand Way. Meanwhile, the Coronado Transportation Commission is continuing to conduct outreach meetings as it works to provide a recommended solution to mobility and safety issues for the Third and Fourth Street Corridor to the City Council. The date the Commission’s recommendations will be forwarded to the City Council has yet to be determined.

Sewer and Alley Improvement Project

Construction on Miguel Avenue began this week as the contractor worked to replace existing pipes and portions of sewer laterals within the public right of way. Work is expected to continue on Miguel through at least the first week of June.

Shuttle Bus Service Begins June 7

The Free Coronado Shuttle program kicks off its third season next weekend. Beginning Sunday, June 7, riders will see a colorful new wrap on the Metropolitan Transit System buses, paid for by the Coronado Tourism Improvement District. This year, the free bus service frequency will increase from 30-minute to 20-minute intervals around the Village area through September 13. The increased frequency ensures riders wait no longer than 20 minutes at any time for a shuttle. The City Council agreed to fund the program as a way to reduce vehicle trips along the Orange Avenue business district during the peak summer season. Special bus tickets will be available to Cays residents who would like to attend the Summer Concerts on Sunday and the City’s planned Fourth of July events. See the Cays Homeowners Association Office for details.

Silver Strand Fence

Progress is being made to install an attractive and functional fence along Silver Strand State Beach. The current fence, which runs from the State Beach’s RV campground to the Navy’s Coastal Campus site, is broken and unsightly. Coronado residents have expressed concern with the fence’s condition for a decade. Recently, a meeting with representatives from the Coronado Cays, State Parks and City staff indicates that there is new momentum to replace the fence with a more attractive, less visually offensive fence, more consistent with the beauty of the Silver Strand. State Parks is critiquing the proposed design and will provide comments to City staff. If acceptable, State Parks will ensure compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act and City staff will produce construction plans and specifications. Meanwhile, funding is expected from several sources. If everything comes together as planned, the new fence could be constructed as early as this winter, avoiding the critical nesting season for area wildlife.

Bridge Filming

The California Department of Transportation has informed the City that there will be filming on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge on Sunday, June 7, from approximately 6 a.m. to noon. Crews will set up in much the same manner as the most recent filming event at the bridge’s toll plaza. CHP units will hold traffic intermittently for about one minute at a time to let the vehicles exit and enter the bridge. Notification signs will be posted prior to June 7 to let people know about the filming.
