Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Witnesses Sought in Serious Injury Accident

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Design Review Commission

On Wednesday, March 11, the Design Review Commission approved a request by the Hotel del Coronado to replace the main swimming pool and pool-side grill restaurant and remove 12 adjacent hotel rooms. The adjacent cabanas, Vista Walk, and surrounding landscaping also will be renovated. With the removal of the guest rooms, public views of the main hotel structure from the beachside Paseo walkway will be improved and guest views from the pool deck to the ocean also will be enhanced.

Witnesses Sought in Accident

On Thursday, March 5, at 2:45 p.m., a woman in her 20’s was found lying in the roadway in the 1500 block of Tenth Street with serious head injuries. A skateboard was found nearby. The Police Department is looking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident or may have seen the woman with the skateboard before the incident occurred. She was wearing a blue tank top, black exercise shorts, black Vans sneakers and was carrying a small brown purse. The skateboard is orange in color with graphics underneath and is approximately 30-inches long. Traffic officers temporarily closed Tenth Street from Adella Avenue to Glorietta Boulevard to through traffic due to the investigation. License Plate Reader Leads to Arrest

One person is in custody after a Coronado patrol vehicle’s license plate reader identified a stolen Honda Civic on Ocean Boulevard at about 3 p.m. on Monday, March 9. Officers ultimately stopped the vehicle on Isabella Avenue near Orange Avenue after it failed to yield and hit another car trying to flee. The driver was arrested and his three passengers were identified, questioned and released at the scene. One passenger was cited for possession of marijuana. The car was reported stolen from Chula Vista on Sunday, March 8. The driver, a male juvenile, was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and felony reckless evading and he was transported to San Diego Juvenile Hall.

Input Sought on Coronado Gateway

The City and RBF Consulting, the company helping to redesign the entrance to Coronado, would like more input on the project. Library Coffee Cart

The City is looking for a vendor to operate the coffee cart concession at the entrance to the Coronado Public Library. The City owns the coffee cart and equipment and pays all related utilities. The service has been a welcome addition to the Library and patrons have said it adds to the ambiance at the City facility. March 22 Bridge Filming

This weekend, you may notice California Department of Transportation signs at the eastbound and westbound bases of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in anticipation of a filming event on Sunday, March 22. On film day, Caltrans and the CHP will be escorting filming vehicles on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge from about 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Caltrans and California Highway Patrol will briefly block traffic as two or three filming vehicles drive over the bridge. Authorities will stop outgoing eastbound traffic for approximately one minute at a time at the base of the bridge, right before the toll plaza, to allow the filming vehicles to exit the toll plaza parking lot onto the bridge. Minimal travel impacts are expected.

Junior Lifeguards Important Dates

The first of six swim test dates for Coronado Junior Lifeguards 2015 and Coronado Surf Awareness 2015 is April 18. There will be two sessions, June 22-July 17 and July 20-August 14. Registration for residents begins April 21. There also will be an introductory Junior Lifeguards program held from June 15-19. Click here for the schedule.
