UT Article explains why Coronado schools receive less state funding than other districts

California school districts are reworking their budgets to reflect an unexpected infusion of education funds laid out in Gov. Jerry Brown’s state spending plan released three weeks ago.

But not every school district is celebrating with the same enthusiasm. Funding is distributed based on student demographics under Brown’s Local Control Funding Formula.

“The amount districts will get (per student) really doesn’t have to do with the size of the district, it has to do with the student (populations) it serves,” said Lora Duzyk, assistant superintendent of business services for the San Diego County Office of Education. “Some districts are not going to get a lot more per student because they are stuck in a sort of demographic no-man’s land.”
