Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Reported Bike Thefts Down in 2014

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Wayfinding Signage

The City has been meeting with a stakeholder group of community members to develop the Wayfinding Signage Program for improved vehicle, pedestrian and bicyclist signage. The preliminary report is now available online for public comment. In addition, the City’s Design Review Commission is scheduled to review the proposed signage program at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way. The City welcomes public comments and suggestions on the proposed program. Please submit them to the City by February 1, 2015, via email to [email protected]; by calling Tom Ritter at (619) 522-7330, by mail to: City of Coronado, Attn: Tom Ritter, 1825 Strand Way Coronado CA 92118. You can see the proposed Wayfinding Signage Program on the City’s website at http://bit.ly/1BMZuq8 or by clicking on the following links: Review of the City of Coronado’s Proposed Wayfinding Signage Program or Proposed Coronado Wayfinding Program prepared by Graphics Solutions. You can see temporary mock-up sign examples in and around Coronado at the following locations:

– Vehicle sign near Alameda Boulevard and Country Club Lane

– Pedestrian sign on Strand Way near the Pocket Park next to the Coronado Yacht Club

– Bicycle sign on the Bayshore Bikeway between City Hall and the Community Center

Coronado Gateway

The City has initiated a project to transform the state Route 75 Toll Plaza into the Coronado Gateway. The goal is to create a community vision that represents the beauty, history and character of Coronado. The first community workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Please email Nancy Reynolds at [email protected] to be added to the interest list and receive project updates and visit the online forum at www.coronadogateway.com to provide your suggestions. The full site will go “live” at the workshop and will include interactive polls for community feedback.

Public Restroom Update

City Council approved earlier this week authorization to prepare construction plans and ask for bids for the repair of the Central Beach restroom. The restroom was built in 1992 and has been in continuous use since then. A number of repairs have been made over the years but the main structure has remained largely unchanged. The project will be bid in the next 30 days. Once the bid is awarded, the restroom will be closed. The City’s portable restroom is in place and ready to be opened during the future restoration of the Central Beach restrooms. Staff anticipates construction to begin in April. Work on the project could take up to three months. The Spreckels Park restroom project also is moving forward. A stakeholder meeting will be held on January 15 involving members of the Design Review Commission, Historic Resource Commission, Concerts in the Park group, Public Art Committee and the Flower Show group. A date for a community-wide meeting will be set at the January 15 meeting. More details will be provided as they become available.

Bike Thefts Down in 2014

Coronado Police statistics show that reported bike thefts in Coronado dropped 11 percent in 2014 over the previous year. A total of 274 bikes were reported stolen in 2014, down from 314 in 2013. This can be credited both to a more alert community and to a crackdown on bike thieves by the Police Department. Bike thefts were unfortunately higher in 2014 than in 2012, possibly due to a concerted effort this past year to promote the reporting of bike thefts. The Police Department encourages the community to report bike thefts by calling the non-emergency line at (619) 522-7350 or by visiting the Department at 700 Orange Ave.

Tender Loving Lawn Care

Some tender loving care is coming to the turfs of City parks. Here’s an update of planned maintenance. At Spreckels Park, sod repair is scheduled for the end of February. Spot repairs will be made at low points within the turf and the entire park will be over-seeded in the spring with new fertilizer. At Mathewson Park, repairs will be made as needed after major rain events, with over-seeding of grass on the entire turf in the spring. At Glorietta Bay Park, the failing lavender will be removed and replaced with lantana. Additionally, Horsetail Reed will be planted to fill in thin spots. The entire turf will be over-seeded in the spring. At Sunset Park, staff will raise low sprinkler heads, fill in low spots in the turf and over-seed the park with in the spring. Finally, at Cays Park, workers will raise low sprinkler heads, fill in low spots in the turf and, again, over-seed in the spring. These actions should bring the City’s parks back to their usual pristine conditions.

Bicycle Visibility

The flier below is being promoted by the Coronado Police Department and the City’s Bicycle Advisory Committee to help promote awareness of bicycle visibility requirements at night. In a heavy bicycle-using community such as Coronado, residents and visitors should be as visible as possible to vehicles when riding after dark. Feel free to post this flier to social media and print it out and post it at your home or office. Click on the image below for a larger version. Be safe, Coronado.

15th Tee Safety Netting

Work on the #15 tee barrier netting, to deflect golf balls from entering Coronado Tennis Center courts, is expected to begin in the next 2-3 weeks. The first step will be the establishment of a staging area for materials and other construction tools, equipment and supplies. Once a staging area is set up, work will commence on erecting the netting supports, then the netting itself. The work should take approximately 6-8 weeks, depending on conditions. The work may cause a minor disruption to golfers, and will impact some tennis program. Contact the Tennis Center at (619) 522-2650 for more details.
