Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Third and Fourth Streets Open House
An open house meeting was held on Monday, November 10, at the Coronado Community Center. Approximately 150 residents stopped by to review traffic consultant Fehr & Peers’ conceptual recommendations for the corridor. The recommendations include a combination of traffic signals, speed tables, raised crosswalks, bulb-outs, pavement markings and intersection modifications. . Staff members from the City and Fehr & Peers were available to explain the various elements of the proposed plan, answer questions, and listen to comments and concerns. Governor Appeals Trial Court Ruling in Favor of Coronado
As expected, the Department of Finance, which is under the Governor’s Office, filed an appeal of a Sacramento Superior Court ruling that found that the loans made by the City of Coronado to the former Redevelopment Agency are valid and should be repaid from the former tax increment received by the Community Development Agency. If Coronado prevails, loans plus interest in the amount of approximately $30 million will be repaid to Coronado’s General Fund. If the trial court’s decision is set aside, property tax funds will be redistributed for the benefit of the State of California.
Avenue of Heroes Ceremony
About 150 people attended the Veterans Day dedication ceremony of the Coronado Avenue of Heroes and Banner Program, which honors men and women of the military who have called Coronado home with banners along Third and Fourth Streets. The first two banners are at Naval Air Station North Island’s Third Street entrance, where the ceremony was held. The late Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale, a Medal of Honor recipient and former prisoner of war, was among the first two people honored with a banner. Stockdale’s wife, Sybil, and family members attended the ceremony. The second banner honored Lt. Theodore “Spuds” Ellyson, known as Naval Aviator No. 1 for participating in the development of aviation at North Island. The City of Coronado, local VFW, the Third and Fourth Streets Neighborhood Association and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the program. Attendees enjoyed the program, including a performance by the kindergarten group, the Radical Rabbits. A total of 20 banners are planned for Third and Fourth streets after applications are received from the community. City of Coronado’s 125th Anniversary Planning
In 2015, the City of Coronado will celebrate 125 years since incorporation. The City, working through its Cultural Arts Commission, plans to collaborate with the community, its residents, businesses and organizations, to plan an extraordinary celebration. A meeting is set for 4 p.m. on Monday, November 17, at the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way, to kick things off. The Cultural Arts Commission encourages individuals to volunteer for this community celebration to help plan events and activities to mark this momentous year. Community-sponsored events will take place throughout the entire year, however, beginning in August 2015, there will be a series of City-sponsored special events counting down the final 125 days to the actual anniversary, culminating with a grand finale on December 11, 2015. Navy Coastal Campus Project/Coastal Commission Determination of Consistency
At a hearing in Half Moon Bay on Wednesday, November 12, the California Coastal Commission found the Navy’s Coastal Campus Project is consistent with the Coastal Management Plan of the California Coastal Act. Coronado had submitted comments with regard to traffic and visual impacts of the Coastal Campus Project at the southern end of the city. At the hearing, representatives of the Navy pledged to work with City officials on these issues.
Design Review Commission
On Wednesday, November 12, the Design Review Commission approved several items, including:
– a new exterior awning on the front of the Hotel del Coronado Grande Hall at 1500 Orange Ave.;
landscape revisions at the Hotel del Coronado between the Windsor Lawn and the Paseo del Mar walkway;
modifications to the location or size of some of the exterior windows and doors for the previously approved four-unit condominium at 1600 Glorietta Blvd.;
– a request to remodel the exterior of the existing apartment building at 455 Orange Ave.;
– a new front canopy and sign for the proposed Fire + Fly Artisan Pizza Restaurant at 849 Orange Ave., which replaces the former Alexander’s Pizza; and
– the exterior design for a new three unit residential condominium development at 812 F Avenue.

A Draft ADA Transition Plan Public meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19 at City Hall.
RSIP-3 Committee meets at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, at City Hall.
The Planning Commission meets at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, at City Hall.
