Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Old Cell Phones Donated to Victims of Domestic Violence

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Portable Restroom Update

The brand new and “wrapped” portable restroom was installed Wednesday, August 27, at its location near the beach end of Avenida del Sol. The restroom has one ADA-compliant stall and two other single use stalls. It will be operational seven days a week and unlocked when the Public Services Beach/Special Services crews first service the area in the morning, before 8 a.m. It will be locked after the final janitorial cleaning of the day, sometime after 8 p.m. The City will monitor usage and will remove the restroom trailer from its current Avenida del Sol location once usage drops for the summer. The trailer will be stored at the Public Services yard when not in use and will be available to support special events within the City throughout the year.

Earthquake Preparedness, Planning

Are you prepared? Following a 6.0 earthquake in Napa over the weekend, Coronado invites residents to review or prepare their own earthquake preparedness plans. Visit the City’s Emergency Preparedness page to find a 32-page brochure, “Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country,” which includes the seven steps to earthquake safety among other important information.

Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Tenth Street Reconfiguration

Last week, the contractor discovered a conflict between the proposed location of a signal pole and an SDG&E electrical line at the intersection of Tenth Street and Orange Avenue. Staff is working with SDG&E to resolve this conflict and keep construction moving. In the meantime, the contractor will continue to install the accessible pedestrian equipment along Orange Avenue and Silver Strand Boulevard.

Cays Force Main Inspection and Air Release Valve Replacement

The contractor, Tharsos Inc., will begin work on Tuesday, September 2, on the Cays Force Main Inspection and Air Release Valve Replacement project that will replace the existing concrete structures that house the Cays force main air release valves. The contractor will install inspections ports at two locations along the force main and provide a physical condition assessment of the force main pipe which was installed approximately 35 years ago. Work begins with demolition of the existing air release structures adjacent to the Bayshore Bikeway between Attu Road and Coronado Bay Road. The construction will occur next to the bike path and, while the contractor is required to maintain access to the path at all times, the City reminds pedestrians and bicyclists to use caution when passing the work zones. Construction is set to be completed in mid-October.

Support Victims of Domestic Violence

Last week, the Coronado Police Department donated 149 cell phones to the U.S. Attorney, Southern District Office, for victims of domestic violence. Most of the donations came from employees, family and friends. The Police Department has been participating in the program for more than 10 years and it is always a success. The Coronado Police Department is one of the program’s largest contributors. If you have an old cell phone and would like to donate it, please bring it to the Police Department at 700 Orange Ave.
