Coronado Middle School provides some amazing opportunities for our children. One such endeavor is the elective widely known as KCMS. Open only to seventh and eighth graders, KCMS is an “application class”. All members fill out a lengthy application and go through an interview process before being selected. Led by teacher Amy Steward, these students learn how to record, direct, write, and edit their very own video productions. They also produce a live broadcast every morning that is viewed by the entire school. If that didn’t keep them busy enough, they are instrumental in producing the annual CSF Connect-a-thon which, this year, raised some $200,000.

This elective teaches the students skills that directly transfer to the job market. They must interact with others, have composure and maturity and be organized. They often spend time outside of school filming for projects and extra time editing and adding music to make sure their product is “just right”.

This Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m., KCMS will present their best videos of the year. Admission is free, though there is a suggested donation of $5. There will be water and treats for sale, as well as raffle tickets for some great prizes like iTunes, Emerald City and Blue Bridge Hospitality gift cards. You can also vote for your favorite video.

All money raised goes right back to the KCMS program and the videos you will witness are sure to be first class. KCMS not only covers events at the middle school, but they can be found at Village elementary events like the jog-a-thon, colonial day and the Christmas Concert at the Hotel Del. They have been spotted at city and community events like the arrival of the USS Coronado and at her commissioning. These are busy and talented students.

The KCMS Oscars Night is a great event to attend for fellow CMS students who want to support their peers. If you have a rising sixth grader, come see what this program produces and what your middle school student can look forward to.
