Vegan Dining in Coronado

I’ve been a vegetarian for a year now, and I’ve found Coronado is a great place for ovo-lactos. However, this past summer, as I found myself bored on a weekday morning, I surfed Netflix and chose to watch Vegucated. I’d purposefully avoided documentaries like this, afraid that they were actually going to have an effect on me and I wouldn’t be able to continue my deep relationship with cheese. Nonetheless, the film completely changed my perspective, I haven’t been able to bring myself to eat animal products since.

Eating vegan surely is a challenge. Not so much in the lack of animal-products, but in the scarce availability of vegan options, especially when dining out. The past few months have taught me a little about how to work a vegan diet in several local restaurants and stores. Here’s what I’ve discovered:

Coronado Brewing Co: Since their veggie patty contains eggs, I usually order the veggie pizza without cheese. On the surface, it doesn’t sound great, but in reality it’s delicious!

Taco Bell: Bean burrito, fresco style (for substance, add guacamole, rice, and potatoes)

Albertson’s: Although a bit hard to find in the cheese aisle, GoVeggie shredded mozzarella “cheese” is so good you will hardly notice it’s not “real.” Not only does it taste real, but it melts to make it have a truly cheesy texture.

Boneys: Ahh, vegan heaven. Counting with many meat substitutes in their designated animal-free section, my personal favorite are the Boca veggie burgers. Best served grilled.

Which Wich: Veggie sandwich. They have so many fresh veggie options that you won’t be missing the cheese.

Villa Nueva: I love Mexican breakfast. On Sundays I like going to Villa and ordering chilaquiles with no cheese or cream.. still as delicious!

Panera Bread: They alternate between the Garden Vegetable Soup (vegan only without the pesto) and my favorite, the Black Bean soup. Both warm, healthy, and cruelty-free!

Yummy Sushi: Cucumber avocado roll.

Subway: Veggie sandwich, I like adding vinegar.

Thanks to these local options, eating vegan is not so hard. These are surely just a few of the many vegan dining options on island, I will share more as I find out, feel free to send in suggestions!
