The exhibit first debuted at the Hotel del Coronado in April 2009, before traveling to locations throughout the U.S. including the San Diego Zoo, Fresno Metropolitan Museum, Naples Zoo, McKee Botanical Garden, Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, Minnesota Zoo and the William J. Clinton Presidential Library & Museum. “We are pleased to have the amazing sculptures back at The Del,” says Todd Shallan, Vice President & General Manager at the resort. “Its fun to see faces, both young and old, light up when they see them.”
Seuss had a long-standing bond with the Hotel del Coronado and could likely see its stylized turrets from his tower studio. In 1970, he painted The Del in all its grandeur, giving his creation the wistful title “I Dreamed I Was A Doorman at the Hotel del Coronado”. In celebration of Geisel’s 100th birthday in 2003, a limited-edition print of this painting was released at a special event at the resort.
Says Seuss, “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”
With this in mind, we invite you to visit and enjoy the sculpture garden and enjoy your own memories and connection to Suess’ lasting messages.
