Vintage Vehicles Perfect for the 4th of July

Dave Gillingham gives his wife Sue a ride in his 1974 BMW motorcycle with sidecar

Guests at Coronado’s 1906 Lodge, a 17 room hotel, are regularly treated to appearances of owner Dave Gillingham’s various vintage vehicles, which he jokingly refers to as “Guest Shuttles”. This holiday weekend, Dave buffed up both of his Volkswagens, a 1967 21 window deluxe bus and a 1973 panel van, to participate in Coronado’s parade. Both VWs have been lovingly restored and can be seen zipping around the island or parked in the Shipwreck Beach parking lot in the late afternoon. The panel van, especially rare due to high import taxes back in the 1970s, is even “bridge worthy”. Dave had so much fun showing off both busses that he even treated his wife Sue to a ride around the island in his 1974 BMW motorcycle with sidecar. Being so low to the pavement is a little disconcerting for Sue but occasionally she and Dave will cruise down the Silver Strand in the Beemer.

Dave hasn’t had as much free time this past year to work on his toys, as he and Sue have been busy running the 1906 Lodge in its first year of operation. With a full house for the 4th of July, Dave decided to spend the afternoon working on his latest project, a 1958 Mercedes Benz. He even got it running!

The 1906 Lodge is located at 1060 Adella Avenue, across from the U.S. Post Office. The main building is a restored boarding house with 6 guest rooms. Eleven new luxury suites were added to the property, as well as underground parking. If you’ve got house guests coming and need an extra bedroom, give us a call at 437-1900. We always give preferential rates to our neighbors. You can view our current specials on our blog: www.1906Lodge.com/blog.
