SAN DIEGO Officials marked the start of a $28 million renovation of the Navy Lodge North Island Tuesday in Coronado. The hotel facility offers temporary living accommodations for military personnel and their families while they look for housing.
The Navy Lodge North Island is one of 42 hotel facilities on military bases around the world.
The renovation includes a four-story addition next to the existing two-story Lodge and a courtyard pool with splash play area for children.
Mike Bockelman is director of the Navy Lodge program.
He said the operating cost of the lodges and the Coronado Lodge expansion is not funded by taxpayers.
“The Navy Lodge Program is a self-contained entity within the U.S. Navy,” Bockelman said. “All the funds generated within the Navy Lodge program worldwide are utilized to expand and update all the Navy Lodge facilities around the world.”
