“Ocean’s 8” – Six Pounds of Diamonds and Sweet Revenge

Ocean's 8

Snitch on a female accomplice and give her five years, eight months, 12 days and counting to plot her revenge. That’s what happens in Ocean’s 8, when Debbie Ocean, played by Sandra Bullock, masterminds a precisely planned and intricate jewel heist. The rest of the cast is a female star-studded list of Hollywood accomplished names including Rhianna, Cate Blanchett, Helen Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling and more.

The heist of a $150 million Cartier necklace is pulled off flawlessly because Ocean knows what it takes having come from a long line of con artists. Ocean used her prison time to mastermind the intricate con and heist. As soon as she is released she recruits and assembles the perfect crew of specialists. A computer hacker, street con, suburban mom, jeweler and fashion designer and people who don’t even know they are part of the crime.

Taking the number one spot at the box office over the weekend, the movie is good fun and surprisingly clean entertainment with sweet revenge. My friend, Tendayi commented, “it was great that they all got to be dressed for the Gala in the end” (the heist took place at the annual and prestigious Met Gala). And I realized as we walked out that we had just watched a movie with few curse words that I recall, no violence and no sex or nudity and it wasn’t a Disney film. I want to see it again. Each actor portrayed their character brilliantly.

In the end, Ocean has her sweet revenge and reveals a heist within a heist that even her “girl gang” didn’t know went down. And the soundtrack is fantastic including Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Were Made For Walkin’.”
