Here are some of the major issues the Coronado City Council will be discussing at its meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Community Grant Program: Receive a report from the ad hoc committee charged with recommending revisions to the program. The methods the city council uses to fund community nonprofits has been criticized for its lack of oversight and rigor. Mayor Richard Bailey has long questioned the current system. During his campaign for mayor he pledged to revise the system. The ad hoc committee’s report is the first step in the process.
Golf Course Restaurant Concession: Approve the selection of Brian Smock Dining to manage the clubhouse restaurant. Smock was recommended by a selection committee that included former Mayor Casey Tanaka. Smock is the head golf pro at the Municipal Golf Course and runs the club house and pro shop at the Municipal Golf Course. The current concessionaire’s contact ends on August 31. Smock was chosen over two other finalists: The Cohn Restaurant Group and Feast & Fareway.
As part of the change in management the staff recommended upgrading the kitchen. It has not been changed since the club house was built in 1998. A consultant hired by the city, Profitable Food Facilities World Wide, and several of the people who submitted bids, said that the layout of the kitchen and the age of the equipment makes it difficult to serve customers efficiently.
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Consider amending parts of the ADU ordinance it approved last November. The proposed changes are how large an ADU can be, how long it must be rented for, and the owner occupancy requirement wording.
On a related issue, the council will also hear from a resident who wants to build an accessory structure that doesn’t comply with the new ADU ordinance. The project was submitted before the city had an ordinance and not subject to it. The planning commission rejected the request. The owner is appealing that decision.
Padres Pedal the Cause: Reconsider a request from the Padres to use the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to raise money for cancer research. The council initially rejected the event because it conflicted with other events being held on the same day. Since then the baseball organization has offered to hold the event on days when no other civic events are scheduled.
