Coronado High Students Receive Service Academy Nominations from Congressman Scott Peters

One of the most challenging aspects of receiving an appointment to any of the five United States Service Academies is first being nominated by a member of the United States Senate or House of Representatives. Potential nominees must submit applications which include: letters of recommendation, high school transcripts, resumes including extracurricular activities, leadership roles, awards and honors, community involvement, work experience and athletics, an essay, and official SAT or ACT test score. Potential nominees are then interviewed and evaluated by an Academy Nominee Selection Board.

California is a highly competitive state for nominations. Each year thousands of very well qualified students apply to their senators and representatives for a service academy nomination. Each member of Congress and U.S. Senator may have no more than five appointees in each of the service academies.

On Saturday, January 28th, 2017, U.S. Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52) presented 30 high school seniors in his district with nominations to the US military service academies for the class of 2021. Nominees were selected among their peers for outstanding academic achievements, values-based leadership qualities, community engagement and strength of character.

Five Coronado students received nominations:

  • Jasmine Rippey – US Air Force Academy (Congressman Scott Peters)
  • Maxwell Stangl – US Air Force Academy (Congressman Scott Peters)
  • Evan Arnold – US Naval Academy (Senator Barbara Boxer and Congressman Scott Peters)
  • Andrew Pettit – US Naval Academy (Congressman Scott Peters)
  • Kirby Smith – US Naval Academy (Congressman Scott Peters)

In addition, Tommy Hardy has been admitted to the US Coast Guard Academy class of 2021.

Congressman Peters described these nominees as not only having met the requirements of the academies, but also embodying the values attributed to the men and women who serve our U.S. military. “Even though academic preparation is essential, there are many other qualities that make a great applicant — character, leadership, motivation, passion, and service,” he said.

We are very proud of our nominees, and we wish them the very best with the application process.
