State report on redevelopment cites Coronado

A state study out Monday said it’s tough to hold community redevelopment agencies accountable for financial decisions because they operate under such a broad definition of blight.

The report, conducted by state Controller John Chiang, scrutinized Coronado and 17 other cities that critics say have abused state laws aimed at boosting low-income housing and addressing urban eyesores.

“For example, the city of Coronado’s project area includes all privately owned property within the city’s limits, which includes oceanfront properties among multimillion dollar homes,” the report says.
