It’s too bad Coronado was not one of the 100 “Fill The Boot” drive locations in San Diego County yesterday.
If you didn’t catch one of the firefighters across the bridge, you can still go to www.burninstitute.org for more helpful burn prevention information and/or to make a donation to a VERY worthy cause. Also check the schedule of events and come check out the Coronado Firefighters entry in the Burn Institute’s Fire Expo and Firefighter Demolition Derby this year June 18th at the Del Mar Fair! Fun for the whole family, but the kids will REALLY love it–lots of fire displays and demos all day long.
We heard there were some who questioned the history (or even legality) of the Firefighters’ “Fill the Boot” drives for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) or local burn centers. Understandably, groups from other worthy causes are even trying to get into the act. The firefighter fill the boot tradition dates back to 1954. To protect it from some local anti-panhandling ordinances and also to distinguish it from other attempts at fund-raising, SB-582 was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2007 which took effect January 1st, 2008. This is one of the many ways the firefighters give back to our communities through one of our signature fund-raising activities (more background on SB-582: http://www.cpf.org/go/cpf/news-and-events/news/breaking-news/firefighter-fill-the-boot-bill-signed/ ):
Hopefully you’ll see us out in the fall before the MDA Labor Day Telethon raising money for Jerry’s Kids as firefighters have been doing since 1954. To date, the firefighters across the United States have raised well over 300 MILLION dollars for the MDA. http://www.iaff.org/mda/index.asp
As always, thank you all so much for your support!
