BEER GARDEN AT FLOWER SHOW: FIRST TIME EVER

FLOWER SHOW LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN;

Beer Garden To Serve Coronado-Made Brews

CORONADO – The Annual Coronado Flower Show, to be held April 16-17, is now in its 86th year. This year, for the first time, they will feature a Beer Garden under the tents in an effort to attract more men. Members of the Island Beer Club will be serving the home grown brew.

“We often see husbands a little less enthusiastic about the Flower Show than their wives,” said Rob Crenshaw who, along with his wife Laura is co-chair of the Flower Show. “Having a Beer Garden gives them another option.”

Gregor Shanks, co-chair of the Home Front Judging Committee, broached the idea last year. Crenshaw and their organizing committee are hoping the addition of a Beer Garden will also create more revenue for the Flower Show.

The Beer Garden will cover roughly 600 square feet, accommodate up to 72 people at a time and be located under the main tent. Visitors over the age of 21 can purchase drink tickets two at a time outside the tent. Beer and wine will be sold at $4 a glass.

“We will be exclusively serving beer made by our own Coronado Brewing Company,” said Crenshaw. “The Chapman brothers (owners of CBC) are donating much of the beer and have indicated they are interested in being involved with us in the years to come. We feel a Coronado brewed beer for the Coronado community will be the perfect match,” he said.

“We’re delighted to support such a wonderful Coronado tradition as the Flower Show,” said Ron Chapman of the Coronado Brewing Company. “My family has been involved in one way or another for generations with the Flower Show and the home front competition. In fact, I’m proud to say that this year the Coronado Brewing Company won “Best Commercial Front Award” for the third year running.

“If our hunch is right, the Beer Garden will be extremely popular and we would hope to create a new tradition within a tradition that will last for years to come.

Two of CBC’s most popular beers will be served on draft, the Islander IPA and Orange Avenue WIT. One has an intense hop bitterness and medium body (IPA) and the other is made from California orange peel and local orange blossom honey (WIT).

“We’ve created a special brew just for the Flower Show,” said Crenshaw. “We’re calling it our ‘Coronado Flower Show Blend,’ which is a combination of the Islander IPA and Orange Avenue WIT. It’s actually quite delicious.”

The Coronado Flower Show will be open Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17 from 1-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. Admission to the Flower Show is $5.
