As I was preparing to put up my 4th of July bunting outside, I noticed that our Coronado flag (and pole) were missing from the front of the house…bummer. I first questioned the family to see if anyone had brought it inside, but unfortunately, no one had. It’s been proudly waving on our home for the past year and we never took it inside because we thought it would be perfectly safe. It almost made it to it’s first birthday next week…sniff.
Well, THANK YOU KIND THIEF for reminding me that “Coro-berry” (Coronado + Mayberry) isn’t as safe as we think it is. Now of course, we all know that Coronado is one of the safest cities in the world. Our crime rate is one of the lowest in San Diego and for that I am thankful. However, this small crime reminded me that we better correct a few of our family’s bad habits:
1. We tend to leave the garage door open too long after coming home – we all know what happens when you do that.
2. My kids leave toys and scooters on the front lawn – they got a lecture about that today.
3. We don’t always think about locking our doors – we are now locking 100% of the time.
4. We lock our bikes up 98% of the time, we are not back to 100% (yes, even at concert in the park).
One eCoronado.com member has had four bikes stolen in less than a year!
As far as who stole the pride and joy of H Avenue, I don’t know. I first thought it was a Coronado High School prankster, but then I thought, our CHS kids are just too cool for that. Perhaps a visitor from Arizona who fell in love with the island and needed a momento – no way, most ‘Zonies I know have vacation homes here and can afford a few Coronado flags – plus, they are as sweet as it is hot back in AZ right now. Then, I thought it was a Navy sailor that just returned back from a long tour and perhaps borrowed it – nah, our Navy sailors are too classy for that. I’m going to chalk this minor loss up to Kate Morgan. That’s right, the ghost that haunts the Hotel del Coronado. I think that with Halloween so far away, she needed something to do to keep her from getting bored…thanks Kate!
So, if you see Miss Kate waving a Coronado Flag around the Del, please remind her to return it to an unwavering fan of Coronado – one of the safest communities in the world – just not for Coronado flags!
A few friends came over for dinner the other night. I don’t think anyone locked their bikes. Thankfully, nothing was stolen.
