Continuing the momentum generated by its successful Red Carpet Oscar Party in March and the recent Act of Valor event launching the Memorial Day Weekend, Coronado Island Film Festival is planning two summer film events, each with its own strong Coronado connection.
On Thursday, June 26, CIFF celebrates the 55th anniversary of the classic comedy Some Like it Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, filmed in Coronado in 1959. The event includes a wine-and-appetizer reception at Hotel del Coronado and a Red Carpet screening of the film at Coronado’s Village Theatre, 820 Orange Avenue, followed by an “I Remember When” panel discussion. Glamorous attire encouraged. CIFF is inviting anyone who was in Coronado at the time of the filming and has a story or two to share to please contact CIFF Executive Director Doug St. Denis at [email protected]. Tickets to this event are $150 each, and will include a copy of the coffee table book, Billy Wilder’s Some Like it Hot, featuring hundreds of photos, the movie script (with Wilder’s notes in the margins), and a DVD tucked inside (a $58 value), plus one Opportunity Drawing chance to win “Dinner For Eight at 1500 Ocean,” the Del’s premiere dining experience, donated by V.P./ General Manager Andre Zotoff. (Must be present to win).
On Thursday, August 7th at 5:30 PM at the Village Theatre, CIFF will present a 3-D screening of the beloved Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland. The 1939 classic was digitally re-mastered last year for the film’s 75th anniversary. It will be introduced by Aljean Harmetz, author of “Making of the Wizard of Oz”. This event coincides with a community-wide celebration of all things Oz, organized by the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. L. Frank Baum, author of the successful Oz series, spent many winters with his wife Maud living and writing in Coronado either at the Hotel del Coronado or in the Star Park Circle house now affectionately referred to as “Wizard of Oz House.” Screening tickets are $25 (ages 13 and above) and $10 for ages 12 and under.
Both screenings are underwritten by Lance Alspaugh’s Vintage Cinemas (Village Theatre), a CIFF Founding Sponsor. Tickets for both events may be purchased at coronadoislandfilmfest.com or in person at Coronado Bliss Salon, 930 Orange Avenue. Proceeds for both events will benefit CIFF.
