Each year, thousands of Coronadans flock to the streets for the annual Public Safety Open House, taking advantage of the opportunity to meet local public safety officials and tour public safety facilities. During the event, spectators had the opportunity to tour the city’s main fire house on Sixth Street as well as the Police Department. Other local, state and federal public safety agencies including Port of San Diego Harbor Police, U.S. Border Patrol, California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire were on hand to provide information on the services they provide.
The event was held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and included an array of activities for families and children, including a rock climbing wall, bounce house and trampoline jump. And there was no shortage of refreshments available, including complimentary hot dogs served by Coronado’s Brownie Troop 1.
“It’s a fun day and our opportunity to get to know our citizens and interact with the community as it relates to the public safety services and resources available to them,” said Fire Department Chief Mike Blood. “We look forward to this event every year.”
The Coronado Police Department was on hand to answer questions on bike safety, the importance of wearing a (properly fitted) helmet and how to register bikes with the department.
Representatives from Coronado SAFE were also in attendance, sharing information on upcoming programs, workshops and events for families within the community.
Members of the Coronado Fire Department conducted a demonstration using a staged car accident, showing how “jaws of life” are used to help rescue a trapped victim from the vehicle.
The annual expo is a great way to educate many people about public and fire safety and the services available to them and also demonstrates how regional public agencies work together.
