Over the past 9 months Coronado residents have watched with curiosity as the former Pacheco’s Auto Body next to Wells Fargo transformed into a maze of steel bars, climbing ropes, and caving ladders. The new facility, Proteus Fitness & Training, will officially open its doors on Friday, November 14th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a rope cutting ceremony by Mayor Tanaka and a BBQ with live music.
Although the new facility may look intimidating from the outside, Proteus offers a family-oriented atmosphere with programs for members of all ages, abilities and athletic backgrounds. Prior to opening its doors publicly, Proteus earned a reputation as being very “hardcore” because it hosts an elite Special Operations Forces Preparatory Program for individuals preparing for BUD/s, SWCC, EOD, etc. However Proteus core offerings include group classes, personal training, diet and nutrition consulting and even Parkour.
They say “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” And when partners Brian Tucker and former Navy SEAL Juan Gonzalez first took over the facility that is exactly what happened. “We planned for the 4,000 s.f. to be dedicated only to fitness & training, however God had other plans,” said Tucker. Today if you walk into the Proteus gym on any given Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m., you’ll see families gathering for worship at the Rock Church Coronado microsite. On Mondays at 7:30 p.m. you’ll see 50 Coronado high-schoolers gathering for Young Life and on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. you’ll see former navy SEAL Jeff Bramstedt leading 25+ men through a Bible study. Apparently the women’s Bible study is much smarter as they meet in the comfort of Cheri Bollman’s living room. “All of this just kind of happened. I suppose God wanted to make sure Proteus Fitness offers body, mind AND spirit,” jokes Gonzalez.
Proteus Fitness was founded on the core values of discipline, mental clarity and the fortitude of the SEAL teams. As a result the Proteus instructors are all experts in strength, conditioning, nutrition, and can customize a well-rounded and effective exercise program for everyone. Group classes at Proteus include a combination of strength training, flexibility, skill, and metabolic conditioning exercises scalable for all levels and backgrounds.
Classes are scheduled throughout the day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. There is literally something for everyone and despite the initial impression of a daunting training regime, the sense of support and community surrounding the facility makes it one of a kind.
If you are interested in learning more about the Proteus facility, we welcome everyone to stop by and join us on Friday the 14thfrom 4:00 to 7:00 for a BBQ. Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka will be cutting the rope at 5 p.m. and there will be live music beginning at 6. There will be a raffle, prizes, a rope-climbing contest, lots of fun for the whole family.
