The students at Silver Strand Elementary have big hearts. Each year, Silver Strand students participate in the American Heart Association’s “Jump Rope for Heart” program. During their regular P.E. classes, students learn jump rope skills while raising money for the AHA.

his past week, on February 13th, the 10th Annual Silver Strand Jump Rope for Heart event took place. Prior to the event each year, the school is visited from a representative from the American Heart Association and students learn about how their donations through Jump Rope for Heart help save lives.
Silver Strand Elementary is the only school in Coronado that participates in the program. Each year, on average, students raise approximately $1,500-$2,500 for the American Heart Association. Last year, fundraising efforts were doubled to nearly $5,000.
As a participating school, Silver Strand receives jump ropes and other supplies from the American Heart Association. AHA also provides the school with a gift certificate for P.E. equipment.
“The kids love this program,” says Sandy White, P.E. teacher at Silver Strand. “It’s great to see the kids work together as they learn to jump rope, especially when the older kids help out the younger students.”
White, who has been teaching at Silver Strand for 11 years, has facilitated the school’s yearly participation in Jump Rope for Heart. She explains that it’s part of the P.E. curriculum and is a great way to get in some cardio and get kids moving.
Students who are among the top fundraisers are recognized at the school’s weekly Friday flagpole assembly and are presented with a medal and certificate for their participation.
