I heartily support the continuation of Bill Sandke as a member of Coronado’s City Council. Most candidates for political office in Coronado talk about traffic and safety but Bill has been a council member who has actually taken specific action to mitigate traffic problems and improve safety in our residential neighborhood. Specifically Bill
- initiated, followed up, and agendized City Council action to request a study of the relinquishment of Route 282 (Third and Fourth Streets between Orange and Alameda Avenues). This had been an issue ignored for too long and early in his tenure as a member of the City Council, Bill took this contentious issue on and wasn’t satisfied until the City took some action on it;
- was instrumental, following up with city staff, to make the Yield to Pedestrian signs on Third and Fourth Streets at F Avenue permanent fixtures. This simple action has improved the safety of all who cross these intersections;
- promoted the addition of speed feedback signs along 3rd, 4th and Alameda through a mid-year budget amendment in 2015;
- supported the Avenue of Heroes Neighborhood Association (AOHNA) efforts to get the Avenue of Heroes (Third and Fourth Streets between Orange and Alameda Avenues) declared a Blue Star Memorial Highway;
- showed his support through City Council votes to improve the lighting and landscaping along the Avenue of Heroes to regain a neighborhood character to Third and Fourth Streets and to provide some traffic calming in this area; and finally
- has been a vocal member of the City Council voting to approve the installation of a traffic signal at Fourth Street and Alameda Avenue to provide the traffic calming on this road by the platooning of traffic that allows periods of safe crossing.
As these efforts reflect, unlike other candidates who talk generally or posture about traffic and safety without providing specific ideas, Bill Sandke is a man of action who advocates for the neighborhoods severely impacted by these issues.
