FREE Educational Programming Offered at the John D. Spreckels Center and Bowling Green

The John D. Spreckels Center and Bowling Green, owned and operated by the City of Coronado, offers a wide variety of programs and services including health and fitness programs, educational and arts programs, volunteer and civic engagement opportunities and much more! One of the exciting, informative and engaging opportunities offered at the Spreckels Center is the FREE Educational Programs. These Programs are in lecture format and are presented by experts in the field. All Educational Programs are offered on Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The September schedule offers the following;

  • Thursday, September 7 – Healthy Aging: Tips for Maximizing Brain Health: The Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego’s expert staff will teach us about the latest research on living a healthy lifestyle, how it affects brain health, and how to incorporate healthy habits into your daily routine to potentially reduce your risk for dementia and memory loss.
  • Thursday, September 21 – UC San Diego Osher Lifelong Learning Institute: “What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, our Brains and Ourselves,” Join us for another great streaming Osher lecture! Profanity is a nearly universal feature of human language and used to express our strongest emotional experiences and to evoke them in others.  What does profanity reveal about the human brain and how our capacity for language evolved? Benjamin Bergen is Professor of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego where he directs the Language and Cognitive Laboratory.
  • Thursday, September 28 – Buffalo Soldiers: 9th and 10th Cavalry: The San Diego Chapter Buffalo Soldiers’ mission is to provide a historically accurate account of the Buffalo Soldiers contribution to American history, specifically the participation of the 9th & 10th Horse Cavalry. Additionally, the San Diego chapter exists to increase awareness and respect for cultural differences and to encourage and improve the quality of life for all people. Join us for an engaging presentation!
