When I first moved down to S.D., with its many picturesque old homes, Coronado still was graced by that enchanting Hometown America atmosphere: I used to view the Island as my mini-refuge from the insanity of the big city. But even then, I was disturbed by the creeping uglification in the form of, most prominently, the Orwellian eyesores down by the SEAL base, and also the modern architecture sprouting up where dwellings had been ruthlessly razed.
Not at all a fan of government intervention, in this isolated case, I think the Island should have an ordinance that no structures be allowed to have a design newer than classic homes that would’ve gone up in the 50s. There could be an extensive data base of permissible types of designs, and an architectural historian could serve as the “gatekeeper” who makes the final decision as to whether a particular house plan passes muster or not.
