Celebrating Labor Day in Coronado

With Labor Day comes the bittersweet end of sweet summer memories and ice tea in the backyard. Every year it approaches before any of us are ready to declare summer over, yet it brings the promise of golden leaves, school activities, and one of the busiest times of the year.

For many families, it also brings the regret of not taking advantage of more vacations before the school year begins.

Which is why we would like to invite you out for one last summer hurrah! Avoid the lamenting of vacations that could have been by spending Labor Day in paradise. There is nowhere better to savor the sweet passage of the seasons than in Coronado.

This year, take advantage of the best Labor Day weekend by joining us on the island.

On the Island

Many guests opt for spending their entire Coronado holiday at the beach. With one of the most renowned beaches in the country, we can’t fault them for that. In fact, most days we would like to join them. Other guests want to complement beach time with activities and festivals.

Luckily, we offer both.

Coronado Concert in the Park

Make sure you’re ready to bust a move at our classic Coronado Summer Concert Series. These free events bring out the entire community for jubilation, merriment, and a chance to test out the latest dance steps.

While dancing is optional, you’ll find that many of the locals get into the swing of the music.

This Labor Day, the concert will be on Sunday September 4th, 2016. The Pop Vinyl band is coming back to the stage after a stunning 2015 performance, promising five decades worth of sound to groove to.

The Pacific Ocean

We don’t know if you’ve heard, but traditionally the Pacific Ocean isn’t the warmest body of water around. Luckily for you, the waters warm from July to November, rising above 60 degrees.

Here’s the best news. The ocean is at its warmest in September, hitting mid-70s. Even better, the surf forecast says that the water temperature peaks specifically on or around September 6th.

Labor Day this year is September 5th, 2016.

That’s a win.

So if you are looking to enjoy the remarkable experience relishing our surf or splashing along the shore, September truly is the best month for you to visit.

Over the Bridge

One of the many highlights of staying in Coronado is the proximity of neighboring San Diego. While our guests enjoy the quiet atmosphere and safe streets of the island, they venture out to the downtown area during the day to take advantage of the festivals, sights, and more that San Diego has to offer.

Guests can easily access downtown via ferry. The 30-minute ride can either take you to the San Diego Convention Center enjoying easy walking access to Gaslamp Quarter, or to the Broadway Pier with easy access to the USS Midway. You can find the schedule here.

Summer Pops

Perhaps one of the most iconic San Diego summertime events, the San Diego Symphony hosts the Ashford Summer Pops series every year to audiences of all ages. This will be one of the most astounding settings you’ve ever enjoyed a concert from. The Embarcadero is set adjacent to the San Diego Bay. The concert starts in the early evening, with the sun setting during the course of the evening.

To say that you will be treated to a visual and musical delight is an understatement.

This year’s Labor Day Weekend series is the 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular. The evening will conclude with a vibrant fireworks display. You have three different chances to catch the event. 1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular will be held each evening from September 2nd-4th.

From Coronado, take the Ferry to the Convention Center.

Festival of Sail

For the aspiring and dedicated sailors of the group, consider attending the Festival of Sail. This annual event delights Labor Day travelers and locals alike. Hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, this is the largest Tall Ship Festival on the West Coast.

Event-goers will enjoy viewing the ships with crews, kids’ activities, live music, and more. One of the most popular attractions of the event is the naval actors and cannons.

The festival runs from September 2nd-4th, 2016.

From Coronado, take the Ferry to the Broadway Pier.

Padres Game

What better way to conclude a family adventure than with baseball? Luckily, the Padres are in town for a Monday game this Labor Day weekend. Our home team will be squaring off against the Boston Red Socks at 1:40pm on September 5th. The park will be hosting a “Mystery Bag Fundraiser” that evening. Additionally, the theme for the game will be “Bark at the Park.” More details will be posted later this summer.
