Coronado Scribes Poetry and Prose Weekly Feature: To Think a Play Could Do That! by Mary Beth Dodson

We, the Coronado Scribes, consist of both professional and amateur writers. We have in common a desire to learn, by sharing our efforts and listening to other writers. We hold pressure-less sessions every Wednesday, at the Coronado Library conference room, starting at 1:30. Often we have guests who wish to just listen. They are welcome, and so are you. Each week on eCoronado, we feature a different piece of prose or poetry produced by one of our writers. Please feel free to comment or ask.

To Think a Play Could Do That!

by Mary Beth Dodson

Sunday afternoon in Balboa Park,

In Old Globe Theatre, audience awaits.

Lights dim. Another era.

“The Rainmaker” arrives at the height of the drought.

It has been months since rain.

Cattle are dying. The ground parched.

Is he a con man, a charlatan?

Can he do the impossible?

Deliver rain from the stingy skies?

Rain to rescue the land, break this feverish heat?

Unlikely.

Another of a procession of men selling magic.

But, as the applause fades from the last curtain call

We emerge from the Old Globe to find

… it is raining……
