Coronado locals tend to think of the Ferry Landing as a place with some good restaurants, but not really a place to shop. The stores there, which many locals regard as filled with key chains, T-shirts, and beach-themed snow globes, are for the tourists streaming off the ferry; but nestled between the bike rentals and sea shell stores are two boutiques that have much to offer Coronado locals as well as our visitors: Miss Match, an exciting boutique for all women (which I couldn’t believe I had never visited before) and Men’s Mojo, which offers fashionable and affordable clothing for men and features a collection that spans clothing for work, vacation, and evening wear.
Why open a fashionable boutique at the Coronado Ferry Landing, where souvenir shops abound? Tally Bercovitz, who co-owns Miss Match and Men’s Mojo with Kevin Churchill, explained her love for the location for the stores: “Is there a more spectacular view than at the Landing?! The view of the Bay to San Diego Skyline can take your breath away.”
Tally told me that while there is clothing in their stores for all ages, she realized that there was a serious lack of fun, hip, and confident styles for men and women in their 40s and 50s. She’s made sure that their stores have plenty of options for that demographic along with all their other fashions.
Since I fit into that demographic myself, I decided to do a little reconnaissance. I went back to Miss Match; incognito, and tested what Tally had promised.
I was delighted. The shop was very stylish; the space was bright, natural – the opposite of the fluorescent glare of a typical department store. The sun was glimmering in; light was coming in from both sides of the room.
Tally had assured me that her staff members were excellent stylists and would be ready to help. For a gal like me who hates to shop, this was key. When I walked in, Rosie greeted me right away; I showed her a couple of tops I liked. I was unsure as to what to wear with them and she readily put together skirts and tops, and a belt to match. Dara also came to help, and made some additional suggestions. Both women were right there to help me and other customers with size changes and style ideas. I was in and out in 25 minutes. Speed shopping is a luxury not enjoyed most places, but if you need something fresh in a few minutes, Miss Match can make it happen.
It’s not just me who was thrilled. Social media user Emily Sage (pictured to the right at the Hotel Del) enthused about Miss Match: “LOVED wearing my miss match dress again to the Military Ball! Received so many compliments and requests for where I bought it.”
There are two Miss Match locations. The original shop, located in Ocean Beach, was so successful that it enabled Tally and Kevin to branch out to Coronado. The Coronado store was opened in February 2014 and one year later, there was a grand reopening following the expansion of the store, a testament to the fact that the store is wildly popular, and fans wanted more.
Men’s Mojo, located right across the Ferry Landing from Miss Match, is the men’s fashion counterpart to Miss Match. Opening just a little over two months ago in February, the store is a treasure trove of fashions for men. The comfort and energy of Men’s Mojo is just as refreshing as Miss Match, although with a distinctly masculine vibe. It’s a great place for women to pick up a few shirts or maybe a pair of jeans for any man for whom they might be shopping. As Tally and Kevin explained, “We opened a place where a man can shop, and, well, a place that a woman would enjoy shopping for a man.” The tagline for Men’s Mojo is “Good Clothes for Great Men.” Tally and Kevin strive to find “the right combination of rugged and masculine, sprinkled with fashion and function” when buying for the shop.
Men’s Mojo also carries a line of men’s screenprint tee shirts that are created by retired Navy SEAL, Mark Golden. Golden’s clothing line, Cannon Drive, is 100% made in the U.S.A. and the tees have patriotic themes. Having this vendor in their shop demonstrates Men’s Mojo’s synchronicity with our community — but even without the Navy connection, these tees are very cool!
Tally and Kevin’s support of the Coronado community goes beyond supporting Cannon Drive clothing. They are also sponsors of Sacred Heart Academy, the Flower Show, the Car Show, and this year, they are sponsoring the Fourth of July Concert in the Park, featuring the Community Concert Band.
I’ve saved the best bit of info for last, though. Miss Match and Men’s Mojo fashions are very reasonably priced, but locals get an added discount – 20% every time you shop.
Make sure to swing by one of these fabulous stores and discover for yourself the best kept secret in Coronado, and don’t forget to get your locals discount!
