November 12, 2014, marked National Letter of Intent signing day for a number of NCAA sports. Student athletes from all over San Diego gathered at the Hall Of Champions in Balboa Park, to sign to their respective universities. Coronado High School had four students in attendance: Erik Armes, Hannah Downey, Cassidy Wiley, and Mackenzie Wiley.
Erik Armes signed to Auburn University where he will run track. Auburn is always a contender on the national level for track. Auburn’s head coach, Ralph Spry, and head mid-distance/distance coach, Mark Carroll (himself a 2 time Irish Olympian), are very good at producing athletes that are capable of competing and doing well at the highest levels of the sport. The track program brings in world-class athletes every year. Said Erik, “the Auburn family has brought me in, and it is such an honor to be a part of it. I look forward to representing Coronado and Auburn to the best of my ability in the upcoming years.”
Hannah Downey will be attending the United States Naval Academy and playing lacrosse. Navy Lacrosse is a part of the Patriot League with their biggest competitors being Loyola Maryland and Boston University. The head coach is Cindy Timchal, who has coached the team to many league championships. Hannah said, “I am most excited about playing at a high level of college lacrosse and playing against my friends from high school on opposite college teams.”
Cassidy Wiley will be attending Stanford University to play water polo. Stanford Women’s Water Polo won the NCAA Championships last year. They play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) league. The team is coached by head coach John Tanner, and associate head coach Susan Ortwein. Cassidy said, “I am excited about playing on a team with talented athletes, and representing Coronado at the next level.”
Mackenzie Wiley will be joining her sister at Stanford University to play water polo. ” I am excited to play for a school that is always a contender for the NCAA championship and to get the chance to play against other talented teams.”
There are future signing dates for other sports. It is expected that Coronado High School will have student-athletes that sign with other sports later in the year.
