Islander Volleyball Prevails in First of CIF

Wednesday evening the 8th seeded Coronado High School women’s volleyball played San Pasqual High, the 9th seed, at the Islander Gym in the first round of the CIF Division II playoffs. The gym was packed with students, family and friends to cheer on the Islanders.

The team was both mentally and physically prepared for the game. It showed. CHS won (best 3 of 5) 25-17, 25-22 and 28-26. The final game had the fans on the edge of their seats. The Islanders trailed the whole game. The Islanders were down 18-24. Alexis Corpus went on a serving streak, serving six in a row. The score tied at 24-24. Needing to win by two, the Islanders went down a point to San Pasqual two more times before pulling ahead for the win. The win was a true team effort. Key to the win was consistent serving and passing. Alexis Corpus had 11 digs, Simone Wilson had 7 digs, Mackenzie Wiley posted 19 kills, Megan Turley 39 assists and 3 aces, and Taylor Page with 3 aces.

The islanders advance to the quarterfinals where they will play Ramona High School at Ramona at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Ramona is currently seated first. Coach Leilani Ahmu is confident that the Islanders can prevail.

Last Thursday night the Islanders honored nine seniors before their game against Mission Bay. Not only was it Senior Night, but by winning the game against Mission Bay, the Islanders won the Eastern league. The last League Championship was in 2004.
