Hometown Hero Program Provides History, Honors Veterans, and Hails Active Military

Coronado’s Third and Fourth Streets Planning Community (TAF) is currently examining how the national Hometown Heroes Banner Program can be incorporated into the Avenue of Heroes. A proposed theme for State Routes (SR 282) and (SR 75) from the Coronado Bay Bridge to Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI).

The Hometown Heroes Banner program is a visual tribute to persons from Coronado who served or are serving in a branch of the military. It is in line with proposed beautification and traffic calming measures for Third and Fourth street neighborhoods

Each banner would portray a Coronado service person, including his/her photo, name, branch and era of service. Banners would be displayed on street lamps along SR 282. Sponsors can display their names on banners. Ideally, some banners would be installed in time for the Coronado July 4th Celebration. The program is non-political and non-partisan.

Hometown Heroes Banners are mounted proudly in hundreds of cities across the United States. Some cities display active service members, while others have historical themes. TAF will encourage a mix of active and historical military in keeping with the Avenue of Heroes theme. Implementation requires approval from the City of Coronado as well as Caltrans. TAF has obtained approval for the permit process to begin with Caltrans, and will seek Coronado approval in April 2014.

Do you have a friend, family member or loved one who has served, or is currently serving in the United States Military? A waiting list is already established. The cost for a banner is $300.00, including mounting. It will be proudly displayed for one year. The banner will be removed in a formal ceremony and given to the service person or their family after the year is completed. TAF hopes to gain the support of local veterans groups to assist families in cost of banner.
