This Thursday’s School Board Workshop features a report on the district’s new teacher evaluation process and information on how teacher evaluations are changing across the United States. Dr. Ruben Ingram, the Executive Director of School Employers Association of California (SEAC) will give the Board news of teacher evaluation changes in California and other parts of the country. Rebekah Barakos-Cartwright, CUSD Human Resources Director, will give a report on the progress the district has achieved locally with changes to the teacher evaluation procedure.
In order to support continuous professional development for certificated employees and to ensure high levels of student learning, the CUSD Governing Board requested last year a revised evaluation instrument be researched, discussed and developed. The Professional Development Committee was established collaboratively with the Association of Coronado Teachers (ACT). The committee consisted of certificated employees, such as site and district administrators, teachers representing each school site, and an ACT negotiating team member.
The result in June was an updated Evaluation Process. This new tool meets proven aspects of evaluation processes: opportunities for consistent and frequent feedback; consistency of the evaluation process amongst school sites in the District; evaluation of specific elements of teaching for effective practice and positive impact on student performance; self-reflection regarding teaching practice; and common language of instruction and performance
Future discussions regarding the Certificated Evaluation Process will include adding student assessment, parent and student feedback, and professional development for each teacher according to individualized needs. The first draft of the Certificated Evaluation Process is currently being piloted during the 2012-2013 school year.
