Roundtable to Learn About Oil Policy
On Friday, February 24th, the Coronado Roundtable members and their guests will have the opportunity to listen to Mr. Robert Campbell, retired Chairman and CEO of Sun Oil give a presentation entitled “United States Energy policy – – – Things Aren’t Always What They Seem To Be”.
Energy, particularly oil and natural gas, are receiving much media attention in this election year. The Keystone Oil Pipeline controversy as well as the discovery of increased natural gas reserves through the extraction method known as “fracking” is receiving much media and political attention. There are those who claim the United States can become energy self sufficient, perhaps even a net exporter of energy, if these resources can be allowed be exploited.
Bob began his career at Sunoco in 1960. After serving in a wide variety of positions, he was elected president of Sunoco, Inc. (then Sun Company, Inc.) in February 1991, chief executive officer in September 1991, and chairman in May 1992. Bob, who guided Sunoco through the decade of the 90’s, served the 114-year old company longer than anyone else as both CEO and chairman except for members of the founding Pew family. He retired from the Sunoco board of directors at the May 2000 annual meeting and from the company in June 2000.
During his career, Campbell was active in oil industry affairs. He served on the EPA’s Clean Air Act Advisory Committee and was a member of the Alternative Fuels Council from 1991 to 1993. In December 1998 he was appointed to the EPA’s Blue Ribbon Panel on MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether).
Bob was formerly chairman of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association. He is currently a Director of VICAL Inc., and is the Chairman of the Board of The Pew Charitable Trust. In 1999, while Mr. Campbell was chairman of Sunoco, the company won the prestigious “Board Excellence Award” from Wharton/Spencer Stuart. In 2001, Mr. Campbell was named one of “Corporate America’s Outstanding Directors” by the editors of “Corporate Alert.”
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, where he graduated with honors in 1959, and a 1961 master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He received a Masters of Management degree from MIT in 1978. Born June 11, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Bob is married to Becci Rocco of San Diego California, has two children, three grandchildren and lives in Coronado, California.
The Coronado Roundtable presents prominent speakers on a variety of topics at their monthly meetings on the fourth Friday of each month at 10 am in Winn Room at the Coronado Library. The meetings are open to the public. Come to the meeting at 9:45 AM and enjoy a cup of coffee.
