CENTRAL CALIFORNIA SURF
Central California, the inconspicuous cousin of the flashy SoCal surf scene, separates the boys from the men. The area is known for freezing water, a thriving shark community, aggressive localismand some huge surf in spots like Mavericks and Ghost Tree.
From the peninsular gridlock of San Francisco, to the wild, scenic coast of San Mateo, to the large and well-respected surf scene of Santa Cruz, to the luxury golf course-lined reef breaks of Monterey, Central California is a showcase of varied and unique surf breaks.
With its jagged contours and the enormous San Francisco Bay, the coastline’s distinct silhouette contributes greatly to the interest of the Central California Surf print, which measures 14″w x 24″h.
SAN DIEGO SURF
With three million residents, San Diego is the third largest county in California, and lays claim to over 50 miles of prime coastline. Beginning in Oceanside, the county stretches down to the southwestern border of the United States where the I-5 crosses into Tijuana. A combination of impeccable weather and a geographically diverse coastline have made San Diego an epicenter of the surf industry.
Encinitas is home to Swami’s, San Diego’s best known reef point break that draws large winter crowds when west or northwest swells roll into town. A deep underwater canyon off the coast of the secluded Black’s Beach in La Jolla creates one of the largest and most powerful waves in San Diego. The reef break at nearby Windansea has a decorated history and has produced a handful of the world’s best surfers. Just a short paddle south and you’ll find Tourmaline, a crumbly longboard hotspot.
These breaks are a small sample of the over 30 surf spots that appear on our San Diego Surf print, measuring 14″w x 24″h.
CORONADO SURF
Coronado is more famous for peaking rooftops than peaking waves, and we admit: it would be a stretch to include Coronado in a collection of the world’s most famous surf destinations. But, it’s our hometown, and we couldn’t pass it up. Despite its shortcomings, Coronado does have a passionate surf community and is home to one of the world’s best longboarders, Taylor Jensen.
Coronado’s four northernmost breaks (Breakers, Erdman’s, Outlet and North) get hit with large closed out south swells great for body surfing, and surfing when the waves hold up. G Street, Central and Dead Larry’s break year round and also pick up with large south swellsbut are off limits to surfers during the summer when they are swarmed by tourists. Pit, Shipwrecks and Gator are probably the most surfed areas of Coronado as the crumbly wave attracts an army of surfers and stand-up paddle boarders.
The Coronado Surf print measures 24″ x 24″ square.
NORTH SHORE SURF
Also known as the Seven Mile Miracle and the World Surf Capital, the North Shore of O’ahu is proving ground for the world’s best surfers. From the shallow reef breaks at Pipeline, Backdoor and Off the Wall to some of the largest waves on the planet at Waimea Bay, this section of Hawaiian coastline has it all: lefts, rights, point breaks, perfect tubes, giant walls, inner reefs and outer reefs.
When asked about this famous stretch (located along the Kamehameha Highway), legendary big wave surfer Laird Hamilton said, “If you’re a surfer and you’re coming upand you’re serious about doing anythingyou gotta go to O’ahu and show what you’ve got. It’s unbelievable how much surf there is in such a small area. And every wave is a great wave.”
The North Shore Surf print measures 24″ x 24″ square.
