Preservation Action Alert from SOHO: Save Our Heritage Organisation

The City of Coronado has approved an Amended Master Plan for the Hotel del Coronado, which includes a new Conference Center and guestrooms to be located on the south side of the property. This location is at a lower elevation than, and at some distance from the historic hotel, and allows its character-defining views from Orange Avenue to be preserved and enhanced.

Now comes a proposal from a group of residents of the Coronado Shores Condominium Towers under a pretense of concern for the historical viewscapes to move the new conference center from the south side of the Del at the base of their condo development to the historic front of the Del in order to protect their own interests, which are their private views.

As many of you know, SOHO has been working diligently with the owners of the Hotel del for over a decade to preserve, restore and enhance this historic building and protect it from incompatible and destructive development, to open and restore the historic north and eastern views and facades, which have been the primary views of the hotel since 1888.

To move the conference center to the north location would completely obscure the hotel and destroy its relationship to the City of Coronado and the region at large. It would destroy in one fell swoop what SOHO has accomplished through over ten years of work in reclaiming the historic views for the public.

We ask you to please write an email that we can present to the Coastal Commission at your first convenience within the next week and let them know that as a resident of San Diego you strongly oppose moving the conference center from the south side to the hotel’s entrance on the north side.
