After two convincing wins against Point Loma and Patrick Henry the week before, Coronado’s Varsity Tennis team went in this week with three matches remaining in their regular season. The first match against San Diego High School proved to be another easy win for Coronado. Having played this team the month before, Coronado had a handle in the doubles lineup. Line 1 (Ryan Wood/Isaac del Rincon), Line 2 (Yannick Peterhans/Jake Lamb), and Line 3 (Anibal Ramirez/Carlos Solloa) Doubles won all nine of their matches against San Diego. The singles lineup for San Diego High School gave Coronado’s lineup more of a challenge. Line 1 Singles, Jorge Yañez, won two of his three matches, while Line 2, Santiago Gonzalez, and Line 3, Andres de la Lama, each won one of their sets. The final score against San Diego was an easy win 13-5.
On Wednesday, Coronado traveled to Del Norte High School. Going in, the players knew that they would face one of their toughest opponents of the season. Unfortunately, they were only able to take four sets off of them, for a final score of 4-14.
Coronado used this loss against one of the top teams in the San Diego section to prepare for the following match against La Jolla High School. Last time these two teams played against each other, La Jolla had taken the win of 7-11, which ranked them No. 1 in Western League and would have placed Coronado at No. 2. Therefore, this match would decide who would be named champion of Western League.
Playing in the singles lineup were Diego Yañez (Line 1), Eric Katz (Line 2), and Jorge Yañez (Line 3). Katz won all three of his sets and was the only player who defeated La Jolla’s Line 1 Singles, in an easy set 6-1. Diego Yañez won two of his three sets fairly easily. Jorge Yañez, being the patient player he is, was able to close out two of his three sets. He won his final set against their Line 2 Singles, who returned every ball made by Yañez, 6-3, giving Coronado a lead of seven sets to two.
Coronado’s doubles teams were faced with a stacked lineup from La Jolla. Wood/del Rincon pulled through with two sets against their Lines 2 and 3 Doubles. Peterhans/Lamb won their first match and lost their subsequent matches. Gonzalez/Ramirez struggled in their first matches, which currently put Coronado at a lead of 10-7. Their last match would decide their Western League victory. In a tiebreaker, Gonzalez/Ramirez gave Coronado the Western League championship, beating La Jolla’s Line 2 Doubles 7-6 (1).
Since both teams defeated each other 11-7, both will be named co-champions of Western League, and both will be receiving a banner to hang up in their gyms.
Coronado will continue their post-season with CIF’s in the following weeks.
